Mirrors and red textured wallpaper covered the walls of the tiny bar. Black paint covered everything else. Under bright lights, the place would look hideous. He walked up to the red acrylic and in a hushed voice he said, “Samuel.”
Samuel was squatting down filling a tiny refrigerator with tall bottles of beer, but his whole body stiffened. He stood up, closed the refrigerator, and turned towards David.
“How did you find this place?” Samuel glanced outside the window “Were you followed?”
“No, I don’t think so. I don’t think they know where I am.”
“Fool. They always will know where you are. Don’t you realize that?”
David locked eyes with him. “I need Max.”
“That would be difficult and foolish,” he grabbed a white rag and wiped it across the bar.
“Where is Alicia? Is she here, too?” David looked him up and down unable to grasp the change from the person who saved his life a few days ago.
“No. Max sent her on an errand.”
“Where?”
Samuel didn’t answer. He had said everything he wanted to say. David looked at him. A silver ring pierced his eyebrow, and a nostril boasted a polished metal stud. A small diamond went through his ear lobe. He looked for sale as well as the women.
He leaned over and said. “You were given a chance in Amsterdam, plus the means to escape in any way you chose.” He looked into David’s eyes. “That chance is no longer available.”
“I need to speak with Max. I understand more than I did before and more people are after me.”
“What is it do you think Max can do for you?”
David was silent for a few moments. “I’m hoping he can help me find a way out. Maybe negotiate on my behalf or find a way to stop whoever is chasing me.”
“That’s quite an ask,” Samuel said.
“Can I have another Coke, honey?” the black hooker called over to the bar. She hitched up the hem of her dress and smiled as David glanced over at her. Samuel took a tall frosted glass, filled it with ice and soda, and placed it on the bar for the girl.
“Jonathan’s memories are more frequent and more painful. I need to find out what information is locked up inside me,” David almost whispered, not wanting anyone else in the bar to hear what he had to say.
“You know his name?”
“Alicia told me.”
Samuel grabbed two glasses from the back shelf and stacked them beside the counter. “He was an associate of Max’s many years ago.”
“You knew him?”
“More, he knew of me. Most of what happened between Max and him was before my time.”
“I’m not looking for protection, just more information on who is chasing me.”
Samuel pulled out a large cutting board along with whole lemons and limes and placed them on the top of the bar. He grabbed the largest lemon and, using a chef’s knife, sliced it first in half then into thin slices.
“Can you arrange a meeting?”
“Come back at 8:00 p.m. Now leave unless you plan to become a paying customer.
